Our Story

I have my 79 year old mother to both thank and blame for the conception of mydc.org.uk.

Slow boat to Bagan

During our 2019 tour of Myanmar we, my mum, her brother and Keith and I, sailed south down the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Bagan via a 7 hour boat trip. Taking in life on the river banks and sailing under the Ava bridge, the first bridge  crossing over the Irrawaddy and built by my great grandfather. A 16 span cantilever bridge between Ava and Sagaing, Mandalay Division, Burma built in 1934 and until the 1990s was the only bridge across the Irrawaddy. It was a moving experience as I had sailed under this bridge before but not with my mum.

Breakfast In Bagan

My mum will speak to anyone any time of the day or night. On our first morning at breakfast in Thante Hotel Bagan, she and my uncle were chatting to a couple of Australian men Jon and Richard. Jon turned out to be English as it was, now living in Australia. Keith and I exchanged pleasantries and we were invited to join them for dinner that evening at the adjoining restaurant Sanon.

Welcome to Sanon

During the course of the evening we listened to Jon and Richard and the story that was Sanon. We listened to their story and the unfolding opportunities and challenges they were meeting. Keith and I shared our thoughts and ideas with Jon and Richard. Jon thanked us but said we don’t want your ideas we want you!

They had been looking for others to join them in their venture and it seemed it was us. The rest as they say is history.

Where are we now?

As of April 2020 we have created Myanmar Youth Development charity to generate funds to support Sanon training restaurant in Bagan, Myanmar.

Sanon training restaurant has provided education and training to 60 students since 2015 and has 45 alumni. Sanon has helped in actively creating lives and building futures for underprivileged youths in Myanmar

Since March 2020, due to covid -19 pandemic, Sanon training restaurant has been closed.  All of our staff are currently furloughed and student training is suspended until September 2021. We are continuing to support the families of the students with a monthly allowance to enable them to buy rice and oil for cooking.

Since its conception Sanon has generated 85% of its own income. We are now having to ask for public donations to help us continue to support our students, their families and our staff.

Myanmar Youth Development Charity had originally envisaged to hold a Gala Ball in Liverpool in November 2020 to help raise funds. Preliminary enquires were held into where, how and when then Covid 19 arrived.

Since then we have had to about turn, build a website and start to share the incredible story of Sanon training restaurant and how we are creating lives and building futures.

Get in Touch. Get Involved.

We’d love to tell you all about Myanmar Youth Development Charity latest news with offers from Sanon training restaurant through our regular newsletter.

Plus, how you can help support us in creating lives and building futures for disadvantaged and underpriveledged Myanmar youths and their families.
